Average Cost To Carpet A 3-Bedroom Home NZ 2023

Average cost to carpet a 3-bedroom home NZ

One of the most common questions we get asked is “how much will it cost to recarpet my home?” and we will usually send out one of our assessors to measure the property to provide an exact quote, however, if you’re shopping around this can be a tedious process and take up a lot of your time. To make things easier, let’s look at the costs involved when recarpeting a house and ways to approximately calculate the installation costs to expect for yours.

Carpet is calculated by the lineal metre (A lineal metre means a one metre length of carpet by the width of the roll, this is typically 3.66m) rather than square metres. When you’re budgeting consider the size of your home, the number of bedrooms, living areas, hallways & stairs, these are going to contribute to the amount of material required to complete the job. In addition to that the shape and layout of the rooms will affect the total meterage, conventional floorplans and standard room sizes tend to be more efficient, most bedrooms measure around 3.55m across to utilise a full width of carpet.

Here’s a breakdown of the costs:

Labour – $1,300

  • Uplifting & disposing of the old carpet and underlay
  • Installation of new carpet & underlay
  • Installing carpet on stairs (if applicable)

Materials – $2300

  • Carpet
  • Underlay
  • Transition bars/Trims

If you’ve found your dream home or you’re at least ready to settle down for the foreseeable future you might want to invest in something a bit nicer, for a mid-range solution dyed nylon or comparative wool carpet the price would be closer to $150 – $200 per lineal metre bringing the total cost to around $5,800 for a standard 3-bedroom home.

If we scale the price by the number of rooms per given property, we can approximate the cost of carpeting most homes. Obviously there will be some variation as some floorplans lend themselves to very efficient usage of carpet width and some not so much. At a glance, the table below should help you get an idea of the cost of carpeting your property for a few price ranges of carpet.

Entry level carpet is based on our 26oz stock rental carpet or similar.

Mid-range carpet is based on an SDN or comparatively priced wool from 32oz – 55oz

Premium carpet is based on an SDN or comparatively priced wool from 55oz and up

Pricing for entry level carpet includes 10mm underlay, for mid-range & premium pricing allows for 11mm underlay.

The carpet prices above assume the existing carpet has been conventionally installed (where the carpet is secured via smooth edge around the perimeter of the room), if your carpet is stuck down with glue, it will cost a bit more to uplift it.
